What Is Polysomnography?

Polysomnography (PSG) is a non-invasive overnight evaluation performed at a hospital-based or accredited sleep center. It is the most comprehensive sleep study available and provides detailed data on all aspects of sleep physiology simultaneously.

Small sensors are placed on the scalp, face, chest, and legs — there are no needles involved. A sleep technologist monitors all parameters throughout the night. You are able to move, use the restroom, and sleep in a private, comfortable room.

Parameters Monitored

  • Sleep stages via EEG (REM and non-REM cycles)
  • Eye movements (EOG)
  • Blood oxygen levels (pulse oximeter — no needles)
  • Heart rate and rhythm (ECG)
  • Breathing rate and effort
  • Snoring
  • Body and limb movements

What to Expect

  • Arrive at the sleep center in the evening
  • Sensors placed — non-invasive, no needles
  • Private, comfortable room for the night
  • Sleep technologist monitors throughout
  • Wake in the morning; sensors removed
  • Full analysis of all sleep stages and events
  • Results reviewed at a follow-up appointment
